Play, Explore, Learn!

Children are major viewers of PBS programming, which is why shows that appeal to them focus on learning, social development, and self-exploration.

Lakeshore Public Television shares PBS' commitment to kids and, therefore, in 2002 implemented an educational outreach program with help from a U.S. Department of Education Ready To Learn grant.

Our Educational Services unit is committed to providing parents, educators, and caregivers with tools to ensure that every child is ready for the challenges of school and their specific grade level. The program is currently funded in part by a Ready to Lead in Literacy grant from the Corporation of Public Broadcasting.

Lakeshore Public Television Educational Services workshops are designed to aid parents in getting a child school-ready. The Educational Services Coordinator will focus on developing reading, science and/or math skills, and will also offer practical guidelines for preparing your new learner for the classroom. While attending a workshop, you can expect to:

  • Understand what your child should know at various stages of development.
  • Learn what teachers will expect from your child at specific grade levels.
  • Practice strategies for engaging your child in a home learning environment.
  • Receive free storybooks to share with your child.

We love what we do. Helping local parents and teachers get kids off to a solid start in school is rewarding work. Educational Services workshops are just one more way Lakeshore Public Television is contributing to the enrichment of the lakeshore region, which is why we think it is so important to do this work right. The Lakeshore Public Television's Educational Services staff pays close attention to national and state standards of education because these are the benchmarks with which students will be tested. Plus, workshop materials align with Indiana's academic standards.
